SPOKANE, Wash. – Two Gonzaga University students appeared in court following a firework explosion in downtown Spokane that injured two people earlier this month. The incident occurred on November 8, under the Wall Street viaduct.
Prosecutors revealed that a firework landed in a 15-year-old girl’s lap. A homeless man, referred to as Mr. Best, tried to save her but suffered severe injuries in the process.
“This explosive device, it landed in a minor’s lap… and the alleged victim in this case, Mr. Best, he was able to get this device and throw it out of the way, which unfortunately it exploded while in his hand, causing very graphic injuries,” said a spokesperson.
Theodore Weymiller and Samuel Hopper, both 21, faced a judge on Wednesday for their first court appearance. Surveillance footage showed a vehicle slowing down before the explosive device was thrown.
The judge addressed the injuries described in the probable cause affidavit before setting bail. “Sounds like pretty much… well, lost his hand. Had to be flown to Harborview. These are not actions that anybody in the community would take lightly,” said the judge.
Defense attorneys highlighted that both men have no prior criminal history and came forward voluntarily after learning about the injuries caused. “The law enforcement did not crack this case, ah Mr. Weymiller, and by extension, his co-defendant came forward when they realized what they had done,” said the defense.
Gonzaga University expressed their sadness over the incident, stating, “They’re deeply saddened to learn that two G-U students may have been involved in a violent incident that occurred in downtown Spokane.” The university is offering prayers for those injured and is cooperating with the law enforcement investigation.
Both men are out on $25,000 bond and are scheduled to be arraigned on November 25.
