Tunnel to Towers to pay off mortgages for 2 fallen Idaho firefighters

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has announced plans to pay off the mortgages of the homes belonging to two fallen first responders from Coeur d’Alene.

Battalion Chief Frank Harwood of Kootenai County Fire & Rescue and Battalion Chief John Morrison of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department were both tragically killed in an ambush on June 29, 2025, while responding to a brush fire. A third firefighter, , remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Chief Harwood served with Kootenai County Fire & Rescue for 17 years and was also a combat engineer with the U.S. Army National Guard. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Chief Morrison had been with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department since 1996, dedicating nearly 29 years to his community. He is survived by his wife and son.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, known for supporting first responders and military families, honors those who have died in the line of duty, especially following the Sept. 11 attacks, by organizing memorial 5K run/walk events across the country. Chief Harwood was a recent participant, running in full firefighting gear weighing more than 60 pounds.

The foundation’s Fallen First Responder Home Program aims to ease financial burdens by paying off mortgages or providing mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen law enforcement officers and firefighters.
