Tuesday morning house fire displaces 5 people, closes road near Jack & Dan’s

SPOKANE, Wash — A fire displaced five people from their Spokane home Tuesday morning.

At 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, Spokane Firefighters responded to a home on East Sharp Avenue, located behind Jack & Dan’s Tavern in the Logan neighborhood.

As fire crews continue cleanup efforts, they are blocking part of E Sharp Ave, so drivers are asked to avoid the area.

According to Justin DeRuyter with the Spokane Fire Department, when crews arrived, they found one person crawling out of a window. All five people in the home had managed to escape safely.

The Red Cross is assisting.”This one was close. We were right on that verge of people getting trapped inside and us having to go in and actually rescue,” said DeRuyter. DeRuyter added that the fire began on the back porch, then spread up the back of the home and into the attic.

It also damaged the neighboring home, which housed six Gonzaga students.Sam Dahlin and Tanner Watkins, who live next door, were awakened by their roommates telling them to evacuate immediately.”I woke up, I thought a tree was falling on our house. The crackling was so loud,” Dahlin said.Despite the stressful morning, the college students expressed gratitude for the quick response that helped keep everyone safe.”Thanks to the man at Jack and Dan’s who woke us up, and thanks to the fire department who made it here exceptionally fast,” Watkins said.

SFD said the cause of Tuesday’s fire remains under investigation. No word on the extent of the damage.
