A new email scam is targeting travelers using the TSA Pre-Check program, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has warned. The scam involves look-a-like emails and advertisements claiming to be from the government, offering to sign up or renew Pre-Check memberships.
In a social media post, the TSA highlighted the threat.
“It’s called malvertising, which is malware inside of their advertising and they’re using A.I. to look very, very legit. That’s why a lot of people are falling for this,” cybersecurity expert Kurt Knutsson explained.
Experts advise that understanding the Pre-Check process can help prevent falling for such scams. Official sign-ups or renewals can only be done in person or through the official TSA Pre-Check website.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends ensuring anti-virus protection on all devices. They also advise being cautious of requests for rushed payments and checking the URL for any links sent via email.
