President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin met for a three-hour closed-door meeting at a military base in Alaska, marking Putin’s first visit to U.S. soil in a decade.
The summit focused on brokering a peace deal to end the three-year war in Ukraine. Both leaders provided scant details about their discussions.
“We had an extremely productive meeting and many points were agreed to and there are just a very few that are left, some are not that significant one is probably the most significant but we have a really good chance of getting there, we didn’t get there but we have a really good chance of getting there,” President Trump stated.
President Putin expressed the importance of an agreement with the U.S. to pave a path toward peace in Ukraine.
“As I’ve said the situation in Ukraine has to do with threats to our security. We have always considered the Ukrainian nation, and I’ve said it multiple times, how strange it may sound in these conditions, we have the same roots.. and everything that is happening is a tragedy for us,” he said.
Putin also mentioned the need to eliminate the primary roots and causes of the conflict to reach a permanent deal. The leaders hinted at another conversation in the future, with Putin saying, “Next time in Moscow.” President Trump acknowledged he might face criticism for such a visit but indicated it could happen.
President Trump plans to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders to brief them on the discussion.
