The Trump administration is set to take action against student loan borrowers who are in default, according to an U.S. Department of Education (DOE) official.
The government will begin garnishing wages of those who have not made a student loan payment in at least 270 days. First notices will be sent to borrowers in default during the first week of January, affecting about 1,000 individuals.
The number of affected borrowers is expected to increase in the coming months. In April, the DOE reported more than 5 million borrowers were in default, with nearly 4 million more delinquent, meaning they hadn’t made a payment in over 90 days.
