WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tourists visiting the U.S. from all over the world may soon have to provide years of social media history in order to enter the country, including visitors from countries that don’t require a visa.

According to a notice posted on the Federal Register on Tuesday, “[Customs and Border Patrol] is adding social media as a mandatory data element for an ESTA application.”

ESTA, which stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization, is an automated system that allows people who are citizens of countries that the U.S. doesn’t require travel visas from—such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia—to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days with no visa.

The notice did not specify what would qualify as adequate proof of social media history.
