Trump administration announces plan to lower US drug costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump unveiled “most favored nation” pricing deals on Friday with nine pharmaceutical companies. This initiative aims to lower drug costs for Medicaid and launch new medications in the U.S. at these reduced prices.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, expressed his support for the plan.

“This is affordability in action. We talk about it in abstract but this is not an abstract concept. This is a very concrete, tangible, personal reality because we’ve got moms with sick children who cannot afford their medications, working families cannot make ends meet, seniors on fixed income. We have 80 million people who have to pay more than $100 a month for their prescriptions. They just can’t keep up,” Dr. Oz said.

Aside from the Medicaid pricing deals, Trump announced that some primary care and specialty medications will also be available on the “Trump RX” online platform. This platform is scheduled to open in January.

While the administration is optimistic about the plan’s potential to reduce drug prices, many experts remain skeptical about its possible benefits.
