MARYSVILLE, Wash. – The trial of Raul Benitez-Santana, charged with killing a Washington State Patrol trooper, is now underway on the west side.
Opening statements took place on Friday in the case against Santana.
Investigators reported that Santana hit Trooper Christopher Gadd last March while driving more than 100 miles per hour on I-5 in Marysville. They stated that Santana was under the influence during the incident.
“The damage was so catastrophic — the car was unrecognizable,” Prosecutors told the jury during opening statements.
The defense, however, presented a different perspective. “When you hear the evidence in this case… the facts… the witnesses… the data… and the science — you’re going to see the state’s case does not hold up. Yes, it was a tragic accident but not a crime,” they said.
The trial continues as the jury hears more from both sides.
