Tree crashes into Spokane Valley home during windstorm

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash – A powerful windstorm Thursday sent a tree crashing into a Spokane Valley home, leaving a family to deal with severe property damage

Homeowner, Aaron Lyons, said the tree came down between 2 and 4 a.m. His wife and son were sleeping at the time, no one was hurt.

“I heard this banging, so I came running out because it was kinda crazy. And then my living room has a tree protruding from it, and all the drywall is off the ceiling and it was just nuts,” Lyons said.

Branches poked through the roof and into the ceilings. Insulation covered much of the furnishings inside the home.

The damage left Lyons in shock as he surveyed the destruction inside his home.

“I have seen trees on people’s houses all the time and I just never knew that was probably what it looks like inside,” he said.

By 8:30 a.m., crews were at the scene clearing trees. The couple said there’s serious damage to the roof and bedroom.

The 31st Avenue area was particularly hard hit by the windstorm. Multiple properties sustained damage, with fallen trees blocking vehicles and damaging fences throughout the neighborhood. One car was completely trapped under a fallen tree, preventing the owner from accessing their other vehicle.

Despite the widespread devastation, the community came together to support those affected. Neighbors checked on each other throughout the morning and offered assistance to families without power.

“You just gotta be nice and help out your neighbors,” Cory Lozano said. “It is unfortunate, but I am fortunate, so I can help them out when they need it.”

Lozano had power and offered freezer space to those without electricity while families waited for utility crews to restore service.

For Lyons, the support from friends, family and neighbors has been crucial in helping his family cope with the property damage.

“Stuff happens for a reason, and you overcome it, that is how life is,” Lyons said.
