Traffic stop leads to arrest of two individuals for trailer theft and other charges in Spokane Valley

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Two people were arrested during a traffic stop in Spokane Valley for stealing a trailer on Friday morning.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a truck pulling a black trailer around 10 a.m. on Friday. SCSO said both the truck and trailer did not have license plates.

When the deputy tried to pull behind the truck, the driver, 29-year-old Sirenity L. Kay turned into a parking lot on East Sprague Avenue.

The deputy stopped Kay from walking away. Kay said the truck belonged to the passenger, later 35-year-old James P. Freeman. SCSO said Freeman and the other passengers in the truck became argumentative.

SCSO said Freeman was not following instructions and picked up a black case from the floorboard. When the deputy told him to put down the case, Freeman refused and began swearing at the deputy.

Freeman dropped a glass pipe with a black residue inside on the floorboard of the truck. The deputy told Freeman to get out of the truck, but he refused and reached toward the dashboard where a large knife was located.

The deputy grabbed Freeman’s hands, pulled him from the vehicle, and detained him.

Kay was initially allowed to hold her dog but told to stay at the scene while deputies issued traffic tickets.

When SCSO checked the vehicle identification numbers, it learned the trailer had been reported as stolen in Spokane on March 25.

Kay had walked away from the scene with her dog and returned about 10 minutes later, telling deputies she forgot she was to stay and went to a nearby market to check the time and let her dog use the bathroom.

Investigators said Kay stole the trailer using Freeman’s truck. Freeman knew the trailer was stolen but did not admit to helping steal it.

The owners of the trailer arrived to take it back.

When deputies arrested Kay, they searched her and found two necklaces in her pocket with price tags still attached. SCSO said Kay admitted to stealing them from the market she had just visited.

Kay was booked into Spokane County Jail for theft. She was released without having to post bond on Saturday by a Spokane County Superior Court Judge.

Freeman was booked into Spokane County Jail for possessing stolen property and possessing a controlled substance.

This is an active investigation.
