Suspect in D.C. National Guard shooting faces new charges

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rahmanullah Lakanwal, accused of shooting two National Guards near the White House, is facing new charges.

He has been charged with federal firearms charges connected to the November 26 ambush that led to the death of West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom and wounded Andrew Wolfe.

Lakanwal is also charged with transporting a firearm in interstate commerce with the intent to commit an offense punishable for more than one year. He has additionally been charged federally with transporting a stolen firearm in interstate commerce.

He remains charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill and illegal possession of a firearm.

Lakanwal is accused of driving from Bellingham, Washington to Washington, D.C. while in possession of a stolen firearm.
