SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – Spokane Valley Deputies arrested a suspect after he attempted to steal more than $2,700 worth of merchandise from a local store.

On May 24, deputies responded to a theft report at a store on E. Sprague Avenue.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, 58-year-old Donald E. Tibbitts Jr. fled the store without paying for a cart full of items.

Store employees said Tibbitts Jr. tossed the items in the parking lot and jumped a fence in an attempt to escape. Deputies found him near the intersection of Sprague and Conklin, still breathing heavily and covered in sweat.

After being advised of his rights, Tibbitts Jr. admitted he tried to leave with the cart but ran when the wheels locked up. A check revealed he had an active misdemeanor warrant for theft.

Tibbitts Jr. was booked into the Spokane County Jail for felony theft and his misdemeanor warrant. His bond is set at $5,250.
