Suspect appears in court following possible DUI crash and altercation in Spokane Valley

Adam Powe, 48, made his first court appearance on Friday after being accused of crashing into a parked car and threatening a bystander with a knife while under the influence.

Powe is in custody facing multiple charges including assault, reckless endangerment and DUI. During his court appearance, Powe spent most of the time speaking with his public defender.

According to court documents, witnesses reported seeing a white sedan speeding and swerving down East Mansfield Avenue on New Year’s morning. The vehicle hit a curb and crashed into a parked car at the Ironwood Court Apartments at a high rate of speed, causing the parked car to completely flip over.

Court documents also stated that the driver exited the vehicle and attempted to remove a young child. The child suffered a three-inch cut above his eye. Witnesses said when they tried to assist the driver, he brandished a five-inch knife and threatened to stab them.

In court, Powe’s public defender mentioned that the facts of the case could be disputed in the future.

The judge set Powe’s bond at $50,000. He is scheduled to appear back in court for his arraignment on January 6.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – Early on New Year’s Day, deputies responded to a car crash near N. Houk Road and E. Mansfield Avenue.

The suspect was reportedly involved in a fight with witnesses after the crash.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies detained the man, who was suspected of driving while impaired with his young son in the car.

Witnesses confronted the man as he tried to leave the scene, leading to a physical fight.

He allegedly brandished a knife and threatened the witnesses who managed to disarm him.

Both the suspect and his son, who suffered a substantial laceration, were taken to the hospital for medical care. The witnesses were not injured.

Deputies charged the man with several offenses, including Vehicular Assault, Felony Harassment, DUI, Reckless Endangerment and Assault 4th Degree. After receiving medical clearance, he was booked into Spokane County Jail.
