Study shows increase in secure gun storage among Washington owners

WASHINGTON – A recent study from the University of Washington revealed a significant rise in the number of gun owners in the state who are storing their firearms securely.

Between 2013 and 2022, the percentage of adults reporting safe storage—defined as unloaded and locked—climbed from 34.9 percent to 48.8 percent.

Researchers highlighted the benefits of secure storage, noting its connection to reduced risks of suicide, accidental injuries, and gun theft.

While the rate of firearm ownership in Washington remained stable, with about one in three households owning a gun, secure storage practices increased across various groups. This includes veterans, parents and individuals of all ages and genders.
