Stolen laptop leads police to $100K property recovery in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — A stolen MacBook’s tracking feature led Spokane police to uncover a massive theft operation, resulting in the recovery of approximately $100,000 worth of stolen property and the arrest of a 30-year-old man.

Police responded near the intersection of East Sanson Avenue and North Addison Street around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after a laptop owner reported their MacBook’s location was showing at a house in the area. The victim’s vehicle had been prowled the day before.

Officers spotted a black Ford Ranger with a couch in the truck bed parked nearby. The same vehicle had been seen leaving a burglary scene at a residence near the intersection of East Central Avenue and North Helena Street.

Police contacted Zachary Guthas, 30, in a detached garage. Guthas eventually admitted to driving the Ford Ranger and burglarizing the house on East Central Avenue.

An officer noticed valuable items in the area and began checking serial numbers. The investigation revealed that a snowblower had been reported stolen in a previous incident.

Officers obtained a search warrant and recovered approximately $100,000 worth of stolen property, contacting at least 17 victims countywide. The recovered items included tools, toolboxes, bikes, e-bikes, motorcycles and yard equipment.

Guthas was arrested on charges of second-degree residential burglary and second-degree possession of stolen property.
