SPOKANE, Wash. – The “Step to Remember” event honored the bravery and legacy of those who lost their lives on 9/11. Participants climbed 110 flights of stairs, either at home or using stair-stepper machines, to pay tribute to the emergency crews who scaled the Twin Towers to rescue victims.
The event was hosted by the Guardians Protection Project. Co-founder Matt Costello shared why this cause is significant to him.
“This all started 4 years ago but 5 years ago now I lost a partner in the line of duty and I watched what his wife went through and wanted to help that transition a little to be able to help those families,” he said. “The best I can come up with is combine something with 9-11, raise some money, and get it to those families.”
Proceeds from the event were divided between the Behind the Badge Foundation, Tunnels to Tower Foundation and the 161st Highlander Association. The Tunnels to Tower Foundation recently helped pay off the mortgages for the families of fallen Battalion Chiefs Frank Harwood and John Morrison.
A memorial for fallen Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Sergeant Kenneth Salas was also part of the event, adding a personal touch to the day of remembrance.
