SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Public Schools is set to make significant strides in its “Together Spokane” plan with two major items on the agenda.
The school board is expected to vote on the first phase of the plan’s implementation, starting with the full replacement of Adams Elementary School.
Additionally, a vote is scheduled to approve a substantial purchase to advance the district’s goal of running its own transportation system. Currently, the district outsources transportation services but has decided to re-evaluate due to rising costs and state requirements.
The district is seeking the board’s approval for up to $29.4 million for buses from RWC Group in Spokane.
An additional request for up to $2.9 million for buses from Schetky in Portland is also on the table.
“It’s about being the most efficient we can with every dollar…what’s the most cost efficient way to do that,” Spokane Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Adam Swinyard said.
Spokane Public Schools currently contracts with Zum School Services to transport its students. Swinyard mentioned that the company was informed during the original agreement that discontinuation with contractors might be a possibility in the future.
The purchase of the buses will be funded through state-allocated money.
