STA double-decker bus crash report points to driver error, not GPS

SPOKANE, Wash. – New details have emerged regarding the . An incident report indicates that the crash was due to a “clearance violation” made by the driver of the Spokane Transit Authority (STA) bus.

The driver had previously claimed that an outdated GPS influenced their decision to drive under the Cedar Street Viaduct. However, the report does not list the GPS as an official cause. Instead, officers cited the driver for second-degree negligent driving.

The STA did consider navigation as a contributing factor but stopped short of attributing the crash solely to the GPS. Early radio traffic described the bus’s roof caving in on the upper level and being stuck under the bridge with an initially unknown number of injured passengers.

Ultimately, seven passengers were reported injured in the incident. In response, STA has been testing the double-decker buses, reviewing their routes and GPS software, and placing a strong emphasis on training.

The double-decker buses are now back in service.
