SPOKANE, Wash. – A Spokane-based nonprofit, Spring of Hope International, is hosting a run this weekend at Life Center in Spokane to raise awareness and funds for water access in Kenya. The event is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

Participants in the race will have the opportunity to walk the last 100 meters with a bucket of water on their heads. This gesture is intended to replicate the daily burden faced by women and young girls in Kenya who walk several miles to access water.

Faith Kimani, one of the organizers, explained the significance of this activity. “I want people to experience the burden that these women back in Africa and young girls go through each and every day,” Kimani said. “They have to walk with this bucket two to three times a day.”

Kimani emphasized the challenging conditions these women face, noting, “Every day you have to walk four miles and about four to even ten miles to get water, which is not even clean water. It starts as early as seven to eight years. It’s a role of a woman to fetch water.”

The event aims not only to create empathy and understanding but also to raise funds for long-term resources for clean water access in Kenya. So far, Spring of Hope International has helped over 50,000 people.

Those interested in participating can still sign up for a $45 entry fee, with an additional $10 for a t-shirt. This initiative provides an opportunity for the Spokane community to contribute to a meaningful cause while gaining insight into the struggles faced by others.
