SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Public Schools are experiencing changes as Adams Elementary students begin learning at Camp Adams. The temporary location, housed at the old Jefferson Elementary, has started its second day of operation.
Superintendent Adam Swinyard expressed enthusiasm about the transition, saying, “this is something that we have anticipated for quite some time. We will call camp Adams.”
Swinyard described the first day at Camp Adams as a success. “Very good smooth first day,” he said.
Students from Adams Elementary, who recently called the school their home, are now adjusting to their new environment at Camp Adams. The change has brought about more than just a shift in surroundings for the children.
“Kids go through a litany of transitions whether that’s you know in their life or in the school setting every new year brings a variety of different points of change for them,” Swinyard said.
Superintendent Swinyard emphasized the importance of preparation for this transition. “One of the things that we know for kids is long runways are one of the things that help them manage transitions,” he said.
While students settle into Camp Adams, preparations are underway for the demolition of the old Adams Elementary. District leaders are ensuring all requirements are met before the building is brought down.
“They’ll start demolition of the old building this month with the hope that new construction will start in March,” Swinyard said.
Residents can expect an updated “Together Spokane” timeline in the next three to six weeks as projects take form.
