SPOKANE — A Spokane woman discovered her pride flag was stolen from her front porch early Thursday morning, an incident captured on doorbell camera that particularly hurt her daughter who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Leia Jones, who lives in Five Mile, noticed the flag was missing when taking her daughter to school Thursday morning. Doorbell camera footage showed someone taking the flag just before 2 a.m.
“I actually keep a pride flag up all year round. I want my daughter and anyone really, to know that they are welcome here,” Jones said.
The theft stung because of what it represents to her family.
“My daughter does identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, and I knew right away that was really going to hurt her seeing that, and the hate in people’s hearts,” Jones said.
Jones has filed a police report with Spokane Police.
“I wasn’t surprised exactly, but it’s very disheartening. I try to see the best in people, but it’s hard to imagine that someone would be hateful enough to go out of their way to steal a rainbow flag,” she said.
For Jones, the issue goes beyond replacing a $20 flag. She said it’s about standing up for her values and demonstrates why Pride Month remains important.
