SPOKANE, Wash. – The National Weather Service office in Spokane is currently dealing with a staffing shortage, which could impact fire season awareness.
On its website, the office lists at least six vacancies. These include three general forecaster positions, two lead forecasters and the service hydrologist.
The Spokane regional office is responsible for covering 21 counties in eastern Washington and north Idaho. It typically handles in-depth forecasts such as snowpack, flood risk, and drought reports.
In February, the NWS lost approximately 600 employees nationwide due to budget cuts. By June, they announced plans to hire more than 100 workers to stabilize operations.
