SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A heartwarming meeting took place between the Spokane Valley Fire Department and a local family, forging a connection that will last a lifetime.
Lori Ragan and her daughter visited Fire Station One on Thursday to express their gratitude to the firefighters who helped Lori’s mother during a medical emergency in March.
Their efforts gave Lori’s mother extra time before she passed away in July.
“I got to hear my daughter say, ‘I love you Nana,’ for the first time. It allowed me, you know, to be able to actually have those last-minute conversations with my mom as far as take care of yourself. She got more time with my grandfather. So, it meant the world to me, honestly,” Ragan said.
Captain Brad Huffman of the Spokane Valley Fire Department emphasized how rare it is for first responders to hear about the outcomes of their patients.
“We do this all day, right? We run a lot of cardiac arrest, critical calls, noncritical calls. But it’s not very often that we get to actually learn what happened to that person, that they walked out of the hospital, that they were able to have some quality time.”
Huffman added that knowing their efforts allowed someone to have quality time and say goodbye to their family “means a ton” to the department.
