SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – The Spokane Valley Fire Department was awarded $5,500,194 in federal grant funds for mitigating wildfire risk in the area.

The funds come from the Community Wildfire Defense Grants program, a $200 million investment into projects across 22 states.

“This project aims to reduce wildfire risks in our community through a comprehensive, collaborative mitigation strategy,” according to a press release from SVFD. “Its main goals are to strengthen local capacity for wildfire prevention, expand public education on wildfire hazards and safety practices, and carry out targeted mitigation efforts in vulnerable areas.”

SVFD is one four fire departments in Washington to receive funding. The state received the largest share of funding in the country.

“This award represents a significant step forward in strengthening our wildfire mitigation efforts, helping to keep our community and its residents safer,” SVFD Fire Chief Frank Soto Jr. said.
