SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – The Spokane Valley City Council is set to address local issues with a public hearing and a policy discussion scheduled for Tuesday night.
A public hearing will focus on the Spokane Regional Emergency Communications (SREC) tower. The council has already passed an emergency ordinance allowing the construction of a 120-foot communications tower by temporarily changing rules on building height restrictions. This ordinance permits SREC to exceed the current 80-foot limit. Residents will have the opportunity to share their thoughts during the hearing.
In addition to the tower discussion, the council members will consider establishing a formal flag policy. This discussion is prompted by a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The proposed resolution aims to limit flag displays on city-owned flagpoles to reflect the city’s views, values and goals, designating them as forums for government expression rather than public speech.
If a formal ordinance is pursued, the proposal would grant the mayor authority over alternate flag displays. Requests would need to be submitted two weeks in advance, with the mayor having the discretion to approve or deny them.
