Spokane Valley considers citywide kratom sales ban

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – Spokane Valley City Council is deliberating on implementing a citywide ban on the sale of kratom, an unregulated drug often found in local gas stations and smoke shops. This discussion comes as Spokane City also considers a similar ban.

The proposed ordinance would prohibit the sale and distribution of kratom in Spokane Valley. Violations could result in a $250 fine for the first offense and $1,000 for subsequent offenses. The ordinance could potentially allow the city to revoke business licenses for non-compliance.

Health professionals have highlighted that kratom contains two psychoactive ingredients that interact with opioid receptors, making it popular for easing withdrawal symptoms. However, long-term use may lead to insomnia, hallucinations, and depression.

The state of Washington is also exploring ways to regulate this substance.
