SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane is currently under a level one water conservation notice due to lower-than-normal river flows. The Spokane River is flowing at about 4,500 cubic feet per second, significantly below the target of 6,500 for this time of year.
Officials are concerned about the impact on fish habitats and the aquifer that supplies the region’s drinking water. As of June 1, residents have been asked to reduce outdoor water use, limiting sprinkler use to four times a week between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.
The city emphasizes the importance of maintaining river flow for the native trout population.
Experts are urging voluntary cutbacks to avoid stricter measures. A shift to level two would introduce enforced limits, but officials hope current efforts will prevent this.
