
SPOKANE, Wash. — As Spokane prepares to host Team Egypt for the FIFA World Cup this summer, the city planning a bigger celebration with its Summer of Soccer campaign.
The city announced today that the campaign will involve residents, businesses and visitors rallying around the sport with various events and community offerings. Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown said the festivities are meant to take full advantage of the city’s opportunity to host Egypt.
“Partners pulling together with a vision to build our city, build our region and put us on the map as a soccer city,” Brown said at a press conference.
There are several ways for people to get involved. The Gesa Pavillion in Riverfront Park will host a watch party for the U.S. men’s team’s June 19 matchup versus Australia. There will be another event for the final game on July 19.
People can get on the field themselves with youth soccer camps and the Spokane Summer Classic tournament.
People are also encouraged to host block parties. The city announced today that people can apply for free permits to host these gatherings, borrow signage and close down non-arterial streets. The application can be found on the city’s website.
A branding toolkit with Summer of Soccer logos is available for businesses to use. There will also be expanded options for restaurants looking to serve food and alcohol outdoors.
The Spokane Transit Authority will offer expanded services June 1 through July 25 to help accommodate visitors.
