SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Police arrested a 31-year-old man following a standoff on the north side, police said in a release.

The incident began just after 11:30 a.m. today when police said they received a domestic violence call in the 7000 block of north Wiscomb.

The suspect was reportedly refusing to let the victim leave the house, violating an order of protection against him.

Officers arrived and safely removed the victim from the home but the suspect retreated to the basement, ignoring police commands, said police.

The situation escalated, requiring the involvement of SWAT, the Hostage Negotiation Team and the Air Support Unit.

Investigators said they used a drone to locate him in the basement, leading to the deployment of chemical agents.

The suspect eventually emerged armed with several weapons. SWAT officers used less lethal tactics to take him into custody around 2:00 p.m, police said.

Charges against the suspect include residential burglary and a felony domestic violence order of protection violation. He is also charged with second-degree malicious mischief for damaging the police drone.

Nonstop Local typically does not name suspects until they are formally charged.
