Spokane running community mourns loss of woman hit and killed

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Swifts, a local women’s running club, is grieving after a tragic incident involving one of their members.

The Spokane Swifts, led by President Heather LeFriec, run daily at 5:30 a.m., a time chosen to avoid traffic. LeFriec emphasized the club’s focus on safety, noting, “We always run early because we don’t have to deal with cars.”

LeFriec says the accident occurred when the driver took a corner too wide, hitting the runners.

In response to the tragedy, the club organized a memorial run, collecting flowers to honor their fallen member.

“I just wanted to do something to honor her and know that we were thinking of her and her family,” LeFriec said.

The incident has sparked conversations within the running group about road safety and the dangers of distracted driving.

LeFriec hopes these discussions will extend to families, encouraging them to talk with their children about the consequences of choices and the importance of safe driving.

As the community mourns, the Spokane Swifts continue to advocate for safety and remembrance. They hope this tragedy will lead to increased awareness and caution on the roads.
