Spokane runners gear up for Bloomsday with practice run

SPOKANE, Wash. — With three weeks remaining until the annual Bloomsday race, runners took to the course Saturday morning for a practice run hosted by Brick West Run Club.

The “Bloomsday Shakeout Run” attracted runners with different levels of race experience, ranging from first-time Bloomsday runners to seasoned veterans.

“I think this will be my 30th Bloomsday that I’ve run,” said Alexa Ymer. “I have run every year that I’ve been alive except for three.”

For others, the practice run offered a chance to experience the complete course for the first time.

“I have run bits and pieces of this course many times, so I’ve never actually run the course as a whole,” said Kevia Maurer.

“Doing Bloomsday, you know, a couple weeks before actual Bloomsday is like a fantastic training as far as getting the hills, you know, where they’re going to be,” said Natalie Sorger.

The morning’s light rain added to the experience. Some runners noted that the conditions were great practice, since you never know the weather you’ll run into on race day.
