Spokane roads to close for Sergeant Salas memorial on August 20

The Spokane Police Department has announced several temporary road closures and traffic revisions scheduled for Wednesday, August 20, in preparation for the memorial service for Sergeant Ken Salas.

The closures will begin around 9:00 a.m.

Southbound traffic on Division at Sharp will be redirected west to Monroe or east towards Hamilton.

Additionally, southbound Washington from Boone to Spokane Falls Boulevard will be closed, with traffic diverted west towards Monroe.

Washington and North River Drive will remain closed for several hours, while Washington and Spokane Falls Boulevard will be closed to northbound traffic until approximately 3:00 p.m.

Division and Riverside will also be closed to northbound traffic until approximately 12:30 p.m.

Assembly between Wellesley and Francis will be closed from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Community members planning to travel near these areas are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

SPOKANE, Wash. – A memorial service is scheduled for Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Sergeant Kenneth Salas, who lost his life while on duty. The service will take place at the Spokane Convention Center on Wednesday, August 20, at 1 p.m.

The public is welcome to attend, although the Spokane Sheriff’s Office has noted that seating will be limited. More details regarding the procession are expected to be released by the Sheriff’s Office in the coming days.

Sergeant Salas was working along Interstate 90 near the Four Lakes exit nearly a week ago when he was struck by a driver while removing a traffic hazard from the road. He was transported to Sacred Heart, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by the Washington State Patrol.
