Spokane road projects face delays, some pushed to 2026

SPOKANE, Wash. – As the construction season winds down, several road projects in Spokane remain unfinished due to recent disruptions. According to the Spokane Public Works Department, a strike by the International Union of Operating Engineers that began on August 13 halted many paving projects across the city.

Hurston Davis from the Spokane Public Works Department explained, “Some of those are having to be pushed out because we just are running out of time and temperature.”

The strike, which lasted over a month, affected projects requiring asphalt, delaying completion and pushing some into 2026. Despite the setbacks, city officials are optimistic about wrapping up current work soon.

“We really are at a place where we should be able to get everything buttoned up here in the next 10 days,” Davis said.

The city’s street projects map shows 20 active sites, including major roadways like Green Street and Division, still causing delays. However, Davis reassures that unfinished projects won’t obstruct winter driving or road clearing efforts.

Looking ahead, next year’s road work season might be busier as delayed projects are added to the schedule. “So we’ve got a schedule and we’ll have to just work them in as we can for next year,” Davis said.

Meanwhile, Spokane County officials expect most county road projects to wrap up by October 31, with Country Homes expected to open soon.
