SPOKANE, Wash. – Efforts to clean up a mineral oil spill in the Spokane River between Argonne Road and Felts Field continued over the weekend.
According to the Washington Department of Ecology, cleanup contractors worked to collect impacted debris from river boom points.
Ecology noted that heavy rain helped disperse the oil, and no sheening was observed on the river between Argonne Road and Upriver Dam over the past two days.
The spill, which occurred on October 10, involved 35 gallons of non-PCB mineral oil entering the river after an oil/water heat exchanger failure at Inland Empire Paper, Ecology said in a release.
Cleanup contractors were on site to contain and assess the spill.
In a positive development, Spokane International Airport reopened the river stretch bordering Felts Field, previously closed for the response.
Ecology said it will continue to monitor the situation, though no wildlife impacts have been reported.
