Spokane River access at Post Falls to open Friday

POST FALLS, Idaho — Avista Utilities announced that Spokane River recreation will resume in a key section near Post Falls Dam beginning Friday, June 12.

The utility company will permit river recreation between the Spokane Street Bridge and the boater safety cables located upstream of the Post Falls Dam. The City of Post Falls boat launch and swim beach at Q’emiln Park will also open to the public on the same day.

River flows are approaching levels that allow summer operations at the hydroelectric facility. Avista expects summer operation at the dam to continue through Labor Day, provided weather conditions remain favorable.

The company cautioned that water levels and conditions around the dam can change at any time, urging river users to exercise caution when using the waterways.

During periods of unusually high flow conditions, the boat launch and swim beach at Q’emiln Park may face temporary closures, along with the river area downstream of Spokane Street Bridge. When closures occur, boaters in the area will receive notification and temporary closure signs will be posted.

River users can access current waterflow information at myavista.com/waterflow or through Avista’s 24-hour telephone information line.

The recorded information service advises shoreline property owners and commercial or recreational users of changes in lake elevations and river flows that may affect water use plans on Lake Spokane, the Spokane River and Coeur d’Alene Lake.
