SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Public Schools (SPS) Board of Directors has been honored as the 2025 Large District Board of the Year by the Washington State School Director’s Association (WSSDA).

WSSDA officials praised the board for its efforts in closing opportunity gaps for Native students and building partnerships with tribal leaders for culturally responsive support.

As a result of these initiatives, the graduation rate for Native students rose from 77% to 89%, and attendance improved by 90%. WSSDA also highlighted a 200% academic growth in middle school English Language Arts among Native students.

“By grounding decisions in data, authentic collaboration and cultural understanding, the SPS Board modeled how leadership rooted in belonging and identity can drive academic excellence,” WSSDA officials stated.
