Spokane programs supporting veterans by building community

SPOKANE, Wash. – This Veterans Day, we’re shining the spotlight on two local programs hoping to fill the gaps for local veterans and build community.

Vets on the Farm is an entirely organic farm part run by the Spokane Conservation District, and is based at the Scale House Market on East 8th Avenue.

“Vets on the Farm is designed for Veterans seeking a new mission and a way to transition back into civilian life through careers in agriculture, farming, ranching, or other conservation-based industries,” according to the organization’s website.

Farm Manager Grant Weber said that farming is becoming an increasingly popular outlet for veterans as a form of creating rather than destroying.

The Parasports all-military wheelchair basketball team is another way Spokane vets can stay active and connected to one another.

One player for the team, known as the Warriors, described the team as a family and said it provides structure and community that veterans struggle to find elsewhere.
