Spokane police issue drone restrictions as FIFA events begin

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Police Department announced new airspace restrictions and security measures as Team Egypt arrives in the city and FIFA events begin.

The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented a Temporary Flight Restriction encompassing Gonzaga University and the surrounding area. The restriction runs 24 hours a day from June 1 through July 20.

During this period, Spokane police will operate drones within the restricted area with FAA permission to ensure community safety and security for Team Egypt. The department will also deploy drone detection equipment throughout the timeframe.

“Community safety remains our top priority as we prepare for a busy and exciting summer of FIFA-related events,” police said in a statement. “Through proactive planning, coordination, and presence at key venues and gathering spaces, SPD is committed to helping create an environment where everyone can celebrate, connect, and enjoy the festivities safely.”

The police department will provide security for FIFA events, working with partner agencies to ensure a safe experience for players, fans, residents and visitors.

Anyone operating drones in the restricted airspace without authorization may face local and federal civil or criminal penalties. Police ask community members to avoid flying drones in the Temporary Flight Restriction area during the entire prohibition period.

The department emphasized that safe drone and crewed flight operations are a safety priority for the community, and everyone can help by following the restrictions.
