SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Police Chief Kevin Hall reflected on recent protests and preparations for upcoming events in an interview with NonStop Local.

Chief Hall discussed the response to protests that took place earlier in the week, noting the exemplary performance of officers. “My stark takeaway is that the officers performed in an exemplary manner,” he said. He emphasized that while most demonstrators were peaceful, some engaged in unlawful conduct that required police action.

Hall clarified misconceptions about the department’s actions, stating, “We did almost everything well… to deescalate the situation.” He added that the protests were not peaceful demonstrations as some believed, but rather unlawful gatherings that needed to be addressed.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Hall outlined the department’s plans for managing large crowds during events such as the Pride parade and festival. He emphasized the importance of ensuring safety for all involved, stating, “These are very labor-intensive types of incidents, and in order to do it safely… we have to apply a lot of resources.”

Hall also highlighted the strong relationships between law enforcement and city leaders, which he believes will continue to grow stronger. “The communication was very close, and I have no qualms or concerns in that regard,” he said.

In a final clarification, Hall addressed the use of less-lethal munitions during the protests, including foam batons, pepper balls, and bean bags, which were used in accordance with policy. He noted that these were used against individuals displaying assaultive behavior.
