SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane plans to connect the Fish Lake Trail with the Centennial Trail to make the area more enjoyable and safer.
The city will connect the trails at Fifth Avenue and Government Way on the west side of the city. A study done by the city found this was the best location for the connection.
Phase one will extend the Fish Lake Trail from Milton Street Trail Head north to 5th Avenue. The city will also improve the trail from Thorpe Road to Fish Lake Trail Head.
Improvements include repaving, new lights and signs, and warning systems in the nearby railroad tunnel.
Trail users support the project.
“Those are two important trail networks in the city. And so for people to be able to use this more often, more easily. I’m all for that,” said Rick Hastings, a trail runner.
“I’m going to go visit a lot more because, I do meditation, so it’s really cool,” said Dekevias Mewbore, who walks the trail.
The project addresses safety concerns from West Hills neighborhood residents. In the past, they have pointed out the consistent graffiti and felt unsafe using the trail even during the day.
The city believes more visitors will use the trail after the re-vamp, which will help with safety.
The project will start mid-summer and continue into fall.
