OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced potential closures of recreation sites due to budget cuts.
The DNR’s Recreation Program has been underfunded for years, impacting maintenance and staff levels.
“Washington’s world class outdoor recreation opportunities draw visitors to the state and Washingtonians to our lands. The last thing we should do is underfund them,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove in a written statement. “But the continued lack of funding threatens that access, creating an unsafe environment for users, and impacting our public lands.”
DNR notes the governor’s proposed 2026 budget includes further cuts, reducing the Recreation Program’s funding by over 20% for the 2025-2027 biennium.
Additionally, $750,000 per year in reductions are proposed, affecting crucial maintenance work.
Only 60 field staff are available statewide, with each person responsible for extensive areas, DNR said.
Funding for Washington Conservation Corps crews, which provided additional support, was not renewed during the 2025 legislative session.
Potential closures and service reductions include Dragoon Creek Campground in Spokane County and Skookum Creek Campground in Pend Oreille County.
These cuts could result in longer storm recovery times, bathrooms that aren’t stocked and more trash on trails.
