Spokane organization receives grant to support maternal mental health

SPOKANE, Wash. — Shades of Motherhood Network received a $30,000 annual grant from the Washington State Perinatal Collaborative to support mental health programs for pregnant women and new mothers over three years.

“Something changes in us. And those changes really lead us down the road of feeling loss, feeling disconnected, and sometimes it could lead to mental health crises,” said Stephanie Courtney, executive director.

The grant funds free doula services and group therapy sessions. Providence has partnered with the organization for four years, serving 145 families two years ago.

“Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die due to pregnancy related issues, and 60% of those causes are preventable,” Courtney said.

The organization targets Spokane because it “historically has not had spaces for black women to focus on the maternal health and get the proper maternal health and mental health supports.”
