SPOKANE, Wash. – Mayor Lisa Brown shared her thoughts on the recent deferral of the Engagement and Enforcement ordinance by the Spokane City Council.
Brown emphasized the importance of the H.O.M.E. Starts Here plan, which aims to improve housing stability and reduce homelessness. She also highlighted the Inclement Weather, Siting, and Good Neighbor ordinance, which sets best practices for emergency housing facilities.
Despite the deferral of the Engagement and Enforcement ordinance, Brown remains committed to finding a balanced approach.
“The status quo isn’t working – it’s just shifting people from one place to another rather than helping them find stability,” said Brown.
Brown stressed the need for a citywide ordinance to engage people with services and housing while enforcing restrictions on unauthorized camping.
“We are still on the path toward our goal of enhanced community safety,” she said.
