Spokane man faces jail for crash injuring child, plea deal reached

SPOKANE, Wash. — John Lassey, 69, has reached a plea agreement to one count of vehicular assault in connection with a crash that struck a six-year-old, according to court documents filed in Spokane County Superior Court.

The in early August happened while the child was riding a bike.

According to the plea agreement, state prosecutors have recommended nine months of incarceration and 12 months of community custody for Lassey. They also require continuous monitoring for alcohol at his expense.

Court records reveal that Lassey has been convicted of driving under the influence three times in the past, in 2002, 2006 and 2007. Police reported that Lassey appeared intoxicated at the scene when they attempted to place him in a patrol car.

Investigators disclosed that Lassey had a blood alcohol level of 0.12 at the time of the incident. After hitting the boy, police said Lassey crashed into a nearby house.

The child suffered severe injuries, including a broken leg, broken pelvis, internal bleeding and serious facial injuries.

Lassey’s plea and sentencing hearing is set for January 30.
