Spokane launches snow response plan for winter months

SPOKANE, Wash. – As winter approaches, Spokane’s Street Department is preparing its snow response plan and urging the community to help keep streets safe and clear.

The city announced that snow operations will begin on November 15 and continue through March 15. Crews are already staffed and ready to manage more than 2,100 lane miles across Spokane.

To ensure a prompt response to snowfall, the city has set up material stations in all four corners of Spokane. This setup is designed to help plow drivers respond quickly as conditions change.

Jon Snyder, Director of Transportation and Sustainability for the City of Spokane, expressed the department’s dedication to maintaining street safety during winter.

“Our Street Department team is committed to improving our street system when it snows, and our goal is to keep commerce moving and life on schedule during these winter weather events. As you can see, the materials are staged and our fleet is ready and our drivers are refreshing their skills,” Snyder said.

Clint Harris, Director of the Streets Department, highlighted a new change this year.

“New for the Streets this year is a change in tires for our road graders…these tires are similar to what we currently use on our front end loaders. These tires will help to allow us to be able to navigate the streets safely and will help to eliminate having to put snow chains on the graders,” Harris said.

The city will monitor weather conditions around the clock. Priority will be given to arterials, hills, hospitals and school routes before other streets are addressed.
