SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – The Spokane Indians baseball team now facing what General Manager Kyle Day calls a “speedbump” after their main concessions stand went up in flames early Friday morning. The stand, known for serving the classic Indians Dog, is a staple at the stadium.
“It has to be an Indians Dog, the hotdogs we serve are second to none,” Day said.
James Stinson, who used to work at Avista Stadium, expressed his concern about the fire, saying concessions stands are essential to the game.
“It’s a part of you,” Stinson said. “In all reality, it’s a huge setback.”
The main concessions stand, built in 2013, handles 90% of the food served at Indians games.
In 2021, a master plan was created to upgrade the stadium, including maintenance on the concession stand, adding insulation and heaters for winter events. The upgrades, costing around $400,000, are now likely lost due to the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“It’s still in a little disbelief, a little shock, that this all happened,” Day said.
Despite the setback, he mentioned the overwhelming support received since the incident.
“The outpouring of support that we’ve received today, whether it’s phone calls, text messages, people dropping by has meant a lot,” Day said.
As the cleanup begins, the Spokane Indians franchise is determined to move forward.
“This is definitely a speed bump, but I know we have a great group and a great organization,” Day said. “It will not be the end of the Spokane Indians, I can promise you that.”
