SPOKANE, Wash. – The Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) and its partners are urging the City Council and Mayor to prioritize pedestrian access in downtown public spaces.
DSP has called for the establishment of a downtown hospitality zone, ensuring that sidewalks, plazas, parks and underpasses remain clear and accessible, DSP said in a release.
A letter from the DSP outlines a strategy to support downtown’s economic activities, emphasizing the need for policy makers to consider the unique hospitality needs of the area. The letter stresses the importance of enforcing new ordinances in a way that does not negatively impact downtown more than other parts of the city.
The DSP is encouraging members of the community to join them in supporting the initiative by signing a petition.
The Spokane City Council is set to hold a hearing and vote on the H.O.M.E. ordinances on Monday, June 16, at 6:00 p.m.
The proposed obstruction ordinance would repeal existing laws on illegal camping, pedestrian interference, and sit/lie regulations, replacing them with a citywide approach that includes outreach and engagement periods before enforcement.
