SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) is emphasizing the importance of fire safety conversations in the home, especially with children of all ages.
SFD highlights the need for a working smoke detector in every room to ensure safety. Additionally, they recommend purchasing a safety box to store all fire-starting devices securely.
The department warns parents to be cautious of kids developing unhealthy habits with fire, which can escalate if not addressed.
Signs to watch for include burnt items in random places, fire-starting tools in children’s bedrooms and an excessive interest in fire activity on social media. These indicators may signal a need for a conversation with your child about fire safety.
SFD provides a free youth fire prevention resource. Usually, a caretaker or someone close to the child initiates contact. The fire department then meets with families in a private setting to address challenges and educate on fire safety.
The program involves creating a fire escape plan and ensuring everyone knows it. They also discuss the risks of unsafe fire use with children.
“What we’re ultimately trying to do is making sure that we’re getting to a safer place before we stop working with the family or make a warm connection to a service provider in the community,” said Jamie McIntyre of the Spokane Fire Department.
For those outside Spokane, checking with a local fire station is recommended, as similar programs may be available.
