SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) has advised the public to avoid purchasing new fire safety products, like fire blankets, during the holiday shopping season. SFD officials recommend sticking to proven tools.
“The NFPA and UL have not confirmed fire blanket safety, so your best protection remains reliable basics: working smoke alarms and a well-practiced fire escape plan,” SFD officials said.
For small grease fires, SFD suggests using a cooking lid or cookie sheet over the pan and turning off the burner, then waiting for it to cool, as opposed to relying on new technologies marketed as grease fire solutions.
